Today we want to inform you about the additives besides the production of garments. Because as you probably know there is more that belongs to a correct, sustainable way of treating your favourite garments. When it comes to washing a garment people are overdosing their washing machines with detergents. Also washing clothes too often will lead to a shorter life of the garment. Most of the detergents include perfumes, colourants and optical brighteners. Often these substances biodegrade poorly but are also the reason for other allergic reactions and skin/ eye irritation. Other than that, one can often find toxics and heavy metals such as arsenic, cadmium and sodium in detergents. These substances can be the cause for the rise in male infertility. And most of all detergents account for between 20 and 60 per cent of the phosphorous build-up in waterways and are thus a major cause of eutrophication, in which streams and lakes suffer blooms of algae (David Nicholson-Lord, 1994).
Thats why we want to introduce two alternatives to wash your clothes in a super sustainable way. The first alternative is the Soap nuts. Soap nuts recently became a popular environmentally friendly alternative to chemical detergent and besides are a gentle option for those with allergies to chemicals. They have been used as an expectorant, and in Ayurveda medicine as treatment for eczema and psoriasis. You can find saponin in soap nuts which is a natural detergent. The shell of the nut absorbs water and releases the saponins, which will free dirt, grime and oils.
I thought so too, but was amazed that they actually work! They leave little to no scent, maybe a slight apple scent, and they don’t bubble, but they do remove stains!‘
But why would you go for soap nuts?
Soap nuts can be used completely and then composted for a no-waste solution, and a simple re-usable muslin bag is all that is needed to add them to a laundry load! Another advantage to Soap Nuts is that they are extremely affordable! A handful of Soap Nuts can be purchased for pennies and used for multiple loads, making them the most cost-effective laundry solution I’ve found too (Katie, 2017).
